Workshop “Children’s Rights and Bioethics in Medicine”


On October 12-13, 2009, Tbilisi State Medical University hosted DAAD Alumni Workshop for Health, Public Health, and Law professionals on the issue: “Child Rights and Bioethics in Medicine.”
Tbilisi State Medical University professors, residents, and master students also attended DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) alumni workshop. The workshop was leaded by Professor Dr. Claudia Wiseman, Head of the Department Medical History and Bioethics Göttingen University (Germany).
The workshop was organized by DAAD-Germany Academic Exchange Service, Tbilisi State Medical University and Association “Right to Health”, by financial support of DAAD Project, coordinated by DAAD alumni Professor Irma Manjavidze.
The participants of the DAAD Alumni workshop’s opening ceremony were the following: Mr. Gebhard Raul, the head of the DAAD Information Center in Tbilisi; Mrs. Rima Beriashvili, the Deputy Rector of the Tbilisi State Medical University; Mrs. Manana Jebashvili, the Deputy Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia; and Mrs. Maia Kopaleishvili, the Deputy Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia. They stressed the importance and delicacy of the DAAD Alumni topic and expressed their full support for further enhancement of collaboration on that issue.
Representatives of Georgian Office of UN Children’s Fund, Open Society Georgian Foundation, lawyers, healthcare organizers, experts in health law and bioethics actively discussed legal, medical and psychological aspects of Children’s Rights Protection. Comparative analysis of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and Georgian legislation was followed by the discussion about children’s rights protection mechanisms in the process of medical service as well as the cases of children subjected to study and research.
At the end of the DAAD Alumni workshop memorandum of cooperation was signed. The memorandum defined rights and responsibilities of the people interested in discussed issues and willing to continue further cooperation in the framework of the networking.
